2008 NBA Playoffs - Day Twenty-One - May 9Here at About.com, we'll be following each day of the 2008 NBA Playoffs - nothing too in-depth with these posts, but a bit of a recap that gives a couple of brief sentences or so, the final results, as well as links to the boxscore.
Los Angeles Lakers 99, Utah Jazz 104 @ Utah / Box Score At 37-4, the Jazz had the best home record during the regular season and the comforts of home helped them get a win over the Lakers who were undefeated in the postseason coming into the game. Kobe Bryant still did his thing in scoring 34 points and the rest of the team did as well, collectively shooting 48.5% from the floor and 81.1% from the charity stripe, but it just wasn't enough. The Jazz's version of the Big Three - Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Mehmut Okur - shot a combined 26-for-47 and 67 of the Jazz's 104 points. It actually would have helped if the Lakers didn't shoot 5-for-23 from beyond the three-point line come to think of it. Yeah, definitely. Lakers lead series 2-1. New Orleans Hornets 99, San Antonio Spurs 110 @ San Antonio / Box Score The Spurs were able to win on their homecourt thanks to the play of both Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, who scored 31 points each. Tim Duncan added 16 points and 13 rebounds. The performance by the Big Three for the Spurs is the first time this series that all three of them seemed to be in synch and performed at their playoff norms. Chris Paul had his usual stellar game with 35 points and nine assists, which wasn't enough to help steal a game on the road. Hornets lead series 2-1. Cleveland Cavaliers 73, Boston Celtics 89 @ Boston / Box Score Not taking anything away from the Celtics, but LeBron James seems way off this series thus far, which has "helped" the Cavs look pretty bad as LBJ's shooting woes are affecting the whole team's ability to put the ball in the basket. Hopefully the Chosen One can change the script back in Cleveland. Celtics lead series 2-0. Detroit Pistons 86, Orlando Magic 111 @ Detroit / Box Score The Magic protected homecourt thanks to a couple of things - Chauncey Billups getting hurt with a strained right hamstring, and taking nothing away from the Magic, an excellent game from Rashard Lewis and very good ones from Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu, and Jameer Nelson. However, Billups may be back for Game Four and if he is, he'll make a difference as they don't call him Mr. Big Shot for nothing! However, the Magic can take comfort in knowing that Game Four stays down in Orlando where they obviously feel most comfortable. Pistons lead series 2-1. Utah Jazz 110, Los Angeles Lakers 120 @ Los Angeles / Box Score The Lakers just keep on winning, owning a 6-0 record during the postseason thus far. There is no answer for Kobe Bryant, but when Derek Fisher puts up 22 points and hits four three-pointers, there's no stopping the Lakers, let alone Kobe. The Jazz needs to make sure there former teammate doesn't make a difference moving forward. Lakers lead series 2-0. Cleveland Cavaliers 72, Boston Celtics 76 @ Boston / Box Score Talk about UGLY! When you think of LeBron James, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett, you have to think that these guys are superstars, right? There's no questioning their talent and what they've accomplished in their careers. If we were to use an analogy relative to beauty, these guys are like Scarlett Johansson, Megan Fox, Natalie Portman, and Jessica Biel. While Garnett lived up to the comeliness of the aforementioned actresses, the other three played like they were the Golden Girls. James shot 2-for-18 from the floor finishing with a dozen points. Pierce shot 2-for-14 from the field ending up with four points. Allen had a big goose egg in the points column, depsite playing 37 minutes. However, he only shot 0-4, which isn't close to how horrible LBJ and the Truth shot. But enough ugly... Garnett finished with 28 points on 13-for-22 shooting from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. As a team, Cleveland shot 30.7% from the floor and that's obviously not going to get it done. I'm not even sure how to attribute the Cavs still being in the game to the end as they held Boston to only 76 points. Was their defense that good? Or was it just bad shooting night for Pierce and Allen? I'd guess the latter. So, in Game Two, the Cavs better step it up offensively because Pierce and Allen won't continue to be this bad. Luckily for the Cavs, neither will James. Orlando Magic 93, Detroit Pistons 100 @ Detroit / Box Score The Pistons took Game Two of the series amidst some controversy with a Chauncey Billups' three-pointer at the end of the third quarter that gave the Pistons a 78-76 lead. However, that aside, the Pistons came through in the clutch getting most of their points at the end of the game from the free-throw line. Dwight Howard came back to his dominating self, as well as 22 points from Jameer Nelson and 20 points from Rashard Lewis. However, that wasn't enough as the Pistons took care of homecourt advantage. The series now shifts to Orlando. Pistons lead series 2-0. San Antonio Spurs 84, New Orleans Hornets 102 @ New Orleans / Box Score Hmm. I honestly did not see this coming. Maybe I should have and I'll admit I was wrong for it, but I bet you I'm not the only one. For the second straight game, the Hornets straight up dominated the Spurs. This time they didn't shut down Tim Duncan, but Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili combined to shoot 9-for-24 from the field. Chris Paul once again led the Hornets with 30 points and 12 assists with Peja Stojakovic adding in an impressive 25 points, 15 of which came from beyond the arch. The teams head to San Antonio. Hornets lead series 2-0. Atlanta Hawks 65, Boston Celtics 99 @ Boston / Box Score It was a physical game at certain points, but it was all Celtics in the all-important Game Seven of this series in Beantown. The Celts move on to the second round to face the Cleveland Cavaliers whom they split the regular season series, 2-2, with both teams winning their home games. Speaking of which, luckily the Celtics have homecourt advantage once again because thus far, it seems it's the only way they can win. A road victory at Cleveland would go a long way in re-solidifying their dominance because the Hawks made the Celtics look vulnerable. Celtics win series 4-3. Utah Jazz 98, Los Angeles Lakers 109 @ Los Angeles / Box Score Kobe Bryant showed why he will eventually be named the regular season MVP as he simply dominated in the first half of play and continued to do so, but in an overall sense in the second half. The Lakers are making it look easy thus far in the postseason and it all begins with Kobe, his faith in his teammates, and Bryant's natural abilities. Lakers lead series 1-0. San Antonio Spurs 82, New Orleans Hornets 101 @ New Orleans / Box Score The triple threat of Chris Paul, David West, and Tyson Chandler saw them face the defending NBA champions and basically manhandled them. West led the way with 30 points, CP3 had his usual double-double with 17 points and 13 dimes, and Chandler was the primary defender that had Tim Duncan having nightmares while awake, on the court! Duncan played a lit bit more than three quarters time and only shot 1-for-9, finishing with five points and only three rebounds. Obviously this lack of production went a long way for the Spurs' loss as Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili were able to still contribute in their usual way. However, let's not take anything away from the Hornets. They looked great on the court and will be a formidable foe for last year's champs. Hornets lead series 1-0. Orlando Magic 72, Detroit Pistons 91 @ Detroit / Box Score It looks like the Pistons aren't going to let anything slip this time around. After losing their first game in the series against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Pistons looked strong against the Magic. They even limited Dwight Howard to only 12 points and eight rebounds, whereas in the previous series for Howard against the Toronto Raptors, he had three games of 20-20s! The Pistons look focused in every facet of the game. Pistons lead series 1-0. Photo: Chris Graythen/Getty Images Sunday May 4, 2008 | permalink | comments (0) Updated 2008 NBA Mock Draft!
Amongst all of this NBA Playoffs madness, let's not forget that a set of new blood will be entering the Association next month at the 2008 NBA Draft. Charlie Zegers and I got together once again to speculate on whom will be taken and by which team in the first round. We still have Derrick Rose at the top spot, but it's hard to go wrong with either Rose or Michael Beasley. Check out 2008 NBA Mock Draft 2.0! Boston Celtics 100, Atlanta Hawks 103 @ Atlanta / Box Score Look at the picture to the left. It pretty much sums up what happened last night. The Hawks are not going away, once again defeating the big-time favorite Celtics for the third time in six games. However, the question becomes, can the Hawks go up to Boston and pull one of the biggest upsets ever in the history of not only the NBA, but of sports? We'll find out on Sunday in Game Seven, and if the Hawks can keep it close, they've shown that they can play in the clutch, despite their lack of playoff experience, something that the Celtics have a lot of. However, it just doesn't look like it when they play down in the ATL. Can they defend homecourt in Game Seven as they have been? Or is an upset in the making? Series tied 3-3. Cleveland Cavaliers 105, Washington Wizards 88 @ Washington / Box Score What a way to close out a series with a hammer. LeBron James and the whole "overrated" theme of the series was put to rest with a triple-double by LBJ that he achieved by the third quarter. This is the third year in a row that the Cavaliers have ended the Wizards' playoff hopes in the first round, but to add insult to injury, every elimination has taken place on the Wizards' floor. The Cavs now wait for the winner of the Celtics/Hawks matchup. Cavaliers win series 4-2. Houston Rockets 91, Utah Jazz 113 @ Utah / Box Score Despite Tracy McGrady's 40 points, it was all Jazz last night in the second half as they pulled away without looking back. Deron Williams showed why he is one of the top point guards in the league, leading the Jazz with 25 points and nine assists. The Jazz move on to face Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. Jazz win series 4-2. Detroit Pistons 100, Philadelphia 76ers 77 @ Philadelphia / Box Score It took a while, but the Pistons finally closed out their series with the Sixers, showing that they're still a dominating team when they need to be. Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups led the way for Detroit who now move on to face the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference semi-final. Pistons win series 4-2.
